He did them in the 70's, before there were rules about what you could and couldn't do to experimental subjects - and the results were truly chilling. He had Stanfod students randomly assigned to roles as prisoners or guards in a simulated prison and watched in horror as they and he himself fell completely into their roles. The experiment had to be stopped after a few days because of the extremity of the behaviors.
